Black taffeta, crisp enough to hold its own folds. The bodice is fitted to a dropped waist, closing on a row of small cloth-covered buttons, and gathers there into a full dirndl skirt cut above the knee. Elbow-length sleeves balloon out and draw in at the cuff. The sheen is real but low, and the structure does the work: this set keeps its volume without anything underneath holding the shape.
